It was very tricky getting the battery compartment open and I was concerned that I would have to send it back. It took some creative "prying" but we got it opened with a very tiny, thin flathead screwdriver. It also took me some time to figure it out but there is a volume control on this unit. It is the small dial on the front that looks like a button, you can turn it up and down to adjust the sound. It appears that the narration from the unit just automatically comes on every time. The only way I have found to avoid this is to turn the volume all the way down. It has a few different light options. The white light and the alternating green/blue light. This is very neat. My kids received this as a Christmas present from their grandparents and have been looking forward to it. My 7 y.o. son who knows a lot about the night sky was not at all interested in this product. The stars were a complete blur even in a dark room. It's just a glamourized nightlight and we will probably just keep it for my 18mo old to play with. And the voice education is just about astrology...blah, blah, blah for 3 boys wanting to learn more about the night sky. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: A Waste unless you want astrology (I wanted astronomy)., By Bart Astor (RESTON, VA, US) - See all my reviews = Fun: = Educational: Amazon Verified Purchase We bought this for a 6-year old who's interested in the stars. Unfortunately, this toy illustrated and talked only about astrology, not astronomy. The light was so weak you had to be in a totally dark room and hold it only about a few feet from the ceiling for the constellations to show up clearly. And it had to be less than 2 feet from the ceiling to be in focus. As opposed to the other reviewer, I had no problem with the battery compartment. The main issue I had was that we were hoping to introduce science, not horoscopes. |
