We decided to go the cheap route and replace it with the Optoma HD20 and I was disappointed. The picture quality was just not as sharp as we were used to so we returned. I read good reviews about the Epson 8700 but was skeptical because I had also heard great things about the Optoma HD20.However, I was shocked at how much better the picture was. Images in the background were so much sharper than either of the Optoma projectors. Right out of the box the picture was great without the need to tweak it very much. It also runs noticeably quieter than the Optomas. One nice feature is it has an automatic shutoff if there is no input. We have kids and sometimes they are careless about turning everything off and those lamps go quickly if you leave it on all night! It is quite a bit larger then the Optomas which wasn't a problem for us but could be if you have limited space... Read more 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful Excellent projector, a great value!, This review is from: Epson Home Cinema 8700 Ub Projector (Electronics) Early this year the old Mitsubishi was showing its age and a new bulb (and then another new bulb) didn't help. Researched the Epson 8700 and several others for a month or so, then pulled the trigger and got the Epson, a $100 rebate and a second bulb - all for $1999, delivered. Great warranty too.I was and still am amazed by this machine! Easy to set up in my already built home theater - I just put it on the shelf right where the old Mitsubuishi was at 13 feet out, dialed it in as to zoom and focus on my 110" screen, plugged in the sound and away we went. The difference in brightness and sharpness was huge. Absolutely brought tears to my eyes. Of course, the tweaking is a never-ending (and plenty fun) part of buying a new toy, so yes, the Epson gets the knobs turned a bit from time to time. I have a 6-month-old Panasonic Blu-ray player feeding HDMI-1 and a venerable Toshiba HD-DVD player feeding the other source. Call me strange, but I like the way the Toshiba... I only watch at night so the space is very dark, with the only caveat being that my walls and ceiling are a light shade. I calibrated the projector with the AVIA DVD and SONY WOW Blueray disk. THX mode was almost perfect with just a few minor adjustments. The picture is sharp, has fantastic blacks, high contrast, and zero motion artifacts (e.g. no rainbows like single chip DLPs).When I updated to HD I initially chose the BENQ w6000 (see my review on this one) - although it was $400 cheaper had fantastic color and razor sharpness, both my wife (who is usually immune to rainbows) and I could see the rainbow effect not only on high contrast title sequences but any time there was a lot of movement in a scene so we had to return it (thanks to Amazon's liberal and very easy return policy).
